Step two- Sew scarves together

For my guestroom window treatments, I’m using 32 scarves- most of them with travel themes- and sewing them together patchwork style. Each window will have two panels and some kind of a topper, either a valance or swag. I’ll be putting purchased sheers behind them to protect them from the direct sun. I’m thinking about sewing the patchwork scarves directly to the panels rather than just layering them in front. Still thinking about that.

I’ve wanted to make these for a long time and I’ve finally started. My collection of travel souvenir scarves have been neatly folded in a drawer for several years and today I took them out and began planning my curtain project. I say planning in a very loose sense because I’ve always been a “design as I go” kind of person. I have an idea in my head and we’ll see whether I’ll be able to make it work.

The guest room decor is Mexican inspired and filled with lots of treasures I’ve found on my trips to Mexico, and while exploring thrift stores and flea markets. The prior owners of our house installed formal drapes…and they’re definitely not my style. I don’t know much about window treatments but I do know what I don’t like. So here is the official “before” picture.
